Mozart’s Sonata in D major for 2 pianos It is said to have many positive effects, including alleviating the symptoms of epilepsy. However, a new meta-analysis conducted in Vienna concludes that there is no scientific evidence linking Mozart’s music to health benefits for people with epilepsy.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote a sonata in 1781 when he was 25 years old. cheer up cheer up (literally: play cheerfully, cheerfully), which researchers have noted and claimed to have surprising properties.
The so-called “Mozart effect” was described in a 1993 research paper, cheer up cheer up Improved performance for spatial tasks such as paper folding and maze solving. Subsequent studies found little, if any, improvement in associated brain function.
But the media didn’t stop making use of the 1993 study’s findings. He falsely claimed that listening to Mozart improved his IQ. Since then, the Mozart effect has remained part of public consciousness, with music improving the ability of mice to navigate mazes and cows’ milk production, and even making bacteria in sewage treatment plants more efficient at producing waste. Recently, another claim has gained attention: listening to Mozart sonatas relieves symptoms of epilepsy.
In a new meta-analysis, researchers from the University of Vienna found that cheer up cheer up Mozart’s sonata movement on epilepsy and related medical conditions. In addition, they considered the effects of bias, the adequacy of the evidence value relied on in previous studies, and the different ways in which the data were analyzed and presented.
Researchers comprehensively reviewed eight previous studies, comprising a total sample size of 207 participants. After analyzing the data, we found little evidence that listening to Mozart sonatas (or any other music) has any significant effect, especially on epilepsy and other common medically-related conditions.
Several studies forming part of the meta-analysis showed an observable treatment effect, but it was considered negligible and the evidence value of the findings was insufficient. Some studies were found to be underpowered. That is, they did not use a large enough sample to answer the research question they were investigating. Other studies reported data selectively.
Researchers Sandra Overreiter and Jakob Piechnig said, “Unsubstantiated authority, inadequate research, and opaque reporting appear to be the main drivers of the Mozart effect myth.
This meta-analysis appears to have resolved the question of whether listening to Mozart can help treat epileptics.
“Overall, our meta-analysis indicates a lack of meaningful support for the beneficial effects of listening to Mozart sonatas, let alone specific Mozart effects on epilepsy.”Mozart’s music is beautiful. However, unfortunately, it cannot be expected to relieve epileptic symptoms.”
