Nissan is recalling some of its latest Aria electric SUVs this month. culprit? Yet another possibility is a loose handle. As a result, the automaker has also issued a stop-sale of new EVs until all of its inventory vehicles have been inspected and, if necessary, fixed.The recall affects a total of 1,063 aliyahs.
Problems arose after the EV was imported from Japan to the US. These cars had to undergo quality control work at the port after arrival, which required the removal of the steering wheel. However, in some cases, the bolts holding the handle may not be properly tightened.
Nissan first became aware of the problem at the end of January, when someone working at the dealership noticed that the Aria’s steering wheel was loose. Exactly one week later a second dealer reported a similar thing and Nissan upon investigation found that in this case the steering wheel bolt was missing. It says it was serviced by the same technician.
After examining other Ariyas in the Nissan dealer’s inventory, we discovered that one other vehicle had a loose steering wheel. This time, the bolt was installed but not torqued correctly.
Nissan contacted Ariya owners this month to arrange for an inspection of the EV and replacement of the steering wheel bolts if necessary. Owners may notice excessive play or looseness in their wheels if their vehicle is affected.
