Crystal-shaped timber cabin assembles like a “game of LEGO”

Wiki World recently completed the installation of easy pop-up sustainable cabins with minimal environmental impact. Nestled on a fragrant lake in Huanggang, China, next to the Neihu Peninsula and surrounded by bamboo groves, Sprite Cabin is composed of a crystal-like structure of wood that combines three pointed volumes. and create a modern hut-like retreat.

“The design of the Sprite Cabin was inspired by the Crystal idea,” Wiki World founder Mu Wei told The New Atlas. “You don’t usually find geometries in man-made shapes in nature. But quartz is very special.”

The project employs a sustainable construction approach that preserves all trees and vegetation on site without damaging the original forest.

Each component of the cabin is custom designed using digital technology and assembled offsite. The cabin arrives at the build site with an easy-to-follow assembly kit. This allows most people to assemble the structure without prior experience or building skills.

The prefabricated laminated timber structure of the Sprite Cabin is assembled on site. It boasts a hexagonal floor plan and utilizes a light wood foundation raised off the ground to further reduce footprint and impact.

“It’s like making a full-fledged LEGO game,” says Wei. “We numbered each part so that workers can easily connect the metal profiles in the correct way.”

Featuring a rustic pattern aesthetic and irregular window openings, the exterior wooden shingles resemble fish skin. A single aluminum-plated façade that reflects the surrounding vegetation helps the cabin blend seamlessly into the landscape.

Each wooden cabin features a master bedroom, living area, bathroom, wood burning stove, wooden outdoor deck, and sharp triangular openings that beautifully frame the river views. The Wiki World design team came up with the idea of creating a two-story floor plan. This loft space is the highest of the three crystal-like structures and is accessed via a wooden ladder, making it a great hideaway for the kids.

The Sprite Cabin concept prioritizes a connection with nature, overflowing with soft natural wood details surrounded by black metal furnishings. Interior design has been kept to a minimum to frame the environment and promote tranquility. The design team believes that the smaller structure will help bring guests closer to their surroundings and disconnect them from modern technology and distractions.

“I like the rough use of materials in these cabins,” Way explained. “Materials are important, they can bring you back to nature and reconnect you to life and yourself. All of our cabins are small and we believe the cabin is a device to bring you back to nature. It allows you to expand your thoughts and emotions.I recommend walking barefoot and disconnecting your cell phone.”

The Sprite Cabin will be completed in January 2023 and is part of the larger Wiki Tribe Retreat. The unique destination offers an interactive architectural experience for parents to bond with their children while reconnecting with the landscape of rural China.
