Google-owned mapping app Waze is adding a new feature to help EV owners find compatible chargers along the way. A user can find her nearest EV charging station by entering her vehicle model and plug type into the app, Waze said on Tuesday.
To avoid outdated and unreliable information about chargers, Waze said it relies on the help of community map editors. They ensure that the details regarding these stations are accurate and up to date.
“By adding the latest EV charging information to Waze Maps, it makes charging your car even easier and lets you know when and where to come to your next station,” the company said in a blog post.
“Thanks to the Waze community’s local map editor, EV data is reviewed and updated in real-time to provide the most accurate and comprehensive information on our maps.”
According to Waze, the new feature will roll out to users around the world in the coming weeks. However, reports from Electrek indicate that the EV charger search feature is currently not working as intended for some users. It shows gas stations instead of chargers.
Last year, Google updated its Maps app to help EV owners find chargers based on their vehicle’s plug type. The company last month went one step further, integrating features such as maps into his EVs from manufacturers such as Polestar, Volvo, General Motors and Renault. Over the last few years, the company has expanded its capabilities to find greener routes for its various vehicles.
The search giant merged its Google Maps and Waze teams in December as a cost-cutting move.
