As every Roman historian and Shakespeare fan knows, a fortune teller once told Caesar to look out for the Ides of March. Today, my beloved low-cost wireless carrier, Mint Mobile, has wrapped up its ironic communication style, celebrity ownership, and $15/month plans…and all of that he’s T- Sell to Mobile for his $1.35 billion.
Good for actor Ryan Reynolds, co-owner of Mint Mobile. As Reynolds said in a statement, “I’m very happy that T-Mobile beat out an aggressive last-minute bid from my mom, Tammy Reynolds, because their 5G network prominence is , because I believe it offers a better strategic fit than my mom’s slightly above average mahjong skill.” We also released a funny takeover video.
Still, the news is depressing. The mint felt fresh. It was a wireless carrier with a sleek website and app that worked (at least for me) simply and seamlessly, in an irreverent and outspoken style (Reynolds gave his subscribers a temporary look at his face at Christmas). I sent a tattoo.”), and a great price. It’s all Just Worked™. It wasn’t just me, Mint put together a number of recommendations, including Wirecutter’s “best budget” wireless option.
So Mint felt special. A customer-focused and quirky company, not enterprise and soulless. Hanging out.
interesting! But it’s also sad.
I am not alone in feeling this way.In the midst of the shocking event, I read the comments below the YouTube video announcement and did not despair for the future of mankind. bottom, but mostly due to acquisitions, not because “meatbot2576” wrote the executable in all lowercase and without commas.) The first 10 comments I read were life’s another good, fun, They were united in their complaints that they weren’t horrible… being bought out by the corporate Brobosphere. sample:
“As a Mint Mobile customer, I’m not thrilled with this announcement. It’s only a matter of time before an acquisition like this drives up prices, lowers quality, and takes away everything that made a small company great.” It’s a problem.”
“No. I was a T-mobile customer for several years, but switched to Mint specifically to get away from T-mobile. It’s just like leaving an abusive relationship. Come pick me up.”
“Well, the prices we’ve been accustomed to have apply. If you believe that Tmobile won’t change everything eventually and raise prices, you’re crazy…. All good Things are coming to an end. Good job on Ryan’s sale.Out!”
“I know I don’t know Ryan personally. I know it was stupid to take a chance on a new phone company because a charismatic guy told me.. actually, He was a celebrity who cared about people and wanted his property to last forever.Having an affordable phone plan has made a huge positive impact on my life…”
“My husband and I are rocking. We loved it being a small wireless company. We loved supporting Mint Mobile. We loved Ryan Reynold’s marketing tactics.” Let’s see how long it will take before prices go up and quality goes down.”
“It’s not like a big wireless company that gets bought instead of trying to create a monopoly.”
“I really hope Ryan starts another phone company. Because of the overall idea that it’s just a budget plan with performance.”
“I am… dissatisfied with this turn of events. We will all revisit this hilarious video and pay double for the same plan and T extra ‘benefits’ two years later.” I comment with disgust that you are doing a mobile crap customer service. I trusted you, Deadpool!”
“What is the worst thing that can happen to America? The consolidation of power by corporations. The fewer realistic options we have, the more it hurts consumers. This is very disappointing.”
“Sold for $1.35 billion. Probably the happiest YouTube video Ryan has ever posted.”
Reynolds will continue his role in The Mint even when he’s not managing the Welsh football team and starring in the abusive superhero movie. Also, Mint will continue to operate as a separate division within his T-Mobile. Additionally, the company maintains a $15/month plan. (For now.) Mint has always been his MVNO reseller of T-Mobile service. So maybe all is well and a few years from now we’ll look back at our ridiculous horrors with a laugh. Perhaps I’ll personally wear his T-shirt in bright pink and declare his love for T-Mobile/Mint from the rooftops. But despite the huge monetary payouts achieved, it’s hard to believe that Mint won’t change some of the things that made it so great.
life teeth Change it of course. (Except for the part of life that complains about change. It’s immutable.) But that doesn’t mean I have to like it. And for once, YouTube commenters are on my side.
