Qualcomm has announced its new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 upper midrange chipset. There was no Snapdragon 7+ Gen 1 or Snapdragon 7 Gen 2. The original Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 was also only featured in a handful of devices, but hopefully that’s changed now.
The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 promises a huge boost in performance and power efficiency. The main Kryo CPU core runs at 2.91GHz, offering a performance boost of over 50% compared to SD7 Gen 1 across the 1+3+4 CPU package.
Meanwhile, the unnamed Adreno GPU boasts a 2x performance boost. The efficiency gain is a bit more modest, 13% in various scenarios.
As is often the case with Qualcomm announcements, detailed specs for the CPU and GPU packages are missing. The good news is that devices running silicon could arrive as early as this month.
Other platform features include automatic variable rate shading that renders the foreground game scene at high resolution and leaves the background at low resolution to save power and resources. It also features his Volumetric Rendering which debuted on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 platform.
ISPs are also boosted. Upgraded to 18-bit triple ISP to stack 30 images into one for better low-light photography. A 200MP sensor is also supported, as is HDR video capture with triple exposure from his two cameras at the same time.
When it comes to AI, Qualcomm’s AI engine offers a 2x performance boost and 40% battery savings per watt.
For connectivity, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 uses the Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF system with downloads up to 4.4 Gbps. But more importantly, phones running on the 7 Series will finally be able to take advantage of the 4G/5G Dual-Sim Dual Active (DSDA) feature.
