Google Photos is a great tool for Android phones, especially Pixel devices. Since it’s made by Google, there are some exclusive goodies like the Photo Unblur and (previously) the Magic Eraser.
New research from 9to5Google suggests that Google Photos may be working on similar new features for the upcoming Pixel 8 series, due later this year.
The latest APK research by 9to5Google points to a new video blur feature that may be ready for the Google Pixel 8 launch in the Google Photos app. For starters, Photo Unblur for the Pixel 7 series takes advantage of Tensor G2’s capabilities to reduce blur in images that may have been slightly off during capture, or remaster old photos that aren’t very sharp. or
9to5 says similar tools have apparently been brought to the video. This could very well be the Pixel 8’s next flagship launch, a render of which was recently leaked.
A screenshot from 9to5’s report shows the blur effect being implemented on the video, but it looks like this feature is still in the works. You can expect perfectly sharpened video to be adjusted (once the feature goes live), but otherwise it may end up blurry.
Nonetheless, this could be a sneak peek at one of the upcoming Pixel smartphone exclusive features, which could be introduced through a future feature drop on current or upcoming Pixel devices such as the Pixel 7a.
Google took a similar approach to the HDR effects feature in Google Photos. It debuted for still images and was recently added to video. It’s still speculation at this point, but it’s possible that it will need the Tensor G3 chip that the Pixel 8 will have.
With that said, Magic Eraser was initially exclusive to Pixel, but the feature was eventually rolled out (via Google One subscription) to older Pixels and other Android phones.
A recent APK survey also showcases additional features for video editing beyond video blurring, such as the new Overlays tab. These are new video effects that act like filters on top of the video you are editing.
Houkago, B&W, Chromatic, Forward, Glassy, Golden, Moiré, Multiply, Polaroid, Rainbow Rays, Reflect, RGB Pulse, Super 8 and VHS for a total of 14. Effects such as Chromatic are said to add aberration effects and Super 8 is for old classic video styles.
