You might think that an old-fashioned wood-and-wire chicken coop is ill-equipped for high-tech. But the designer of the camera-and-alarm poultry house known as The Coop tends to disagree.
Manufactured by Austin, Texas-based startup Coop, the setup is designed for use by ordinary people who have up to six chickens in their backyards. It consists of a shelter called a roost and an outdoor area surrounded by a removable fence called a run.
The all-weather Roost is made of double-walled recyclable plastic, and the voids between those walls provide insulation on cold nights. An integrated ambient light sensor automatically opens the shelter door when the sun rises and closes again when the sun sets in the evening to keep predators out.

Users can also monitor their chickens from anywhere with internet access via the app and two HD night vision cameras (one Roost and one Ran). If a predator is spotted trying to enter either area, the user can remotely trigger her SOS mode, causing both cameras to illuminate his lights and close Roost’s door (if open). , plays dog barks through the built-in speaker.
Even if the user isn’t constantly checking in through your app, you’ll be notified when motion is detected outside of Roost or Run. You can also use the app to manually open and close the door if there are people stranded outside in the evening.
Hens lay eggs in nest boxes that can be unlocked and pulled out from the outside, allowing users to retrieve eggs without fuss. The roost floor is covered with a compostable compressed pulp litter box that can be quickly removed and replaced by opening one of his roost walls.
Coop is currently available for pre-order in the US with a temporary price of US$1,995. The planned retail price is US$2,495. Buyers will also need a $19.99 monthly membership for online camera access and trash trays (12 per year). The first orders will ship this spring and summer.
