In 2020, we first heard about BrakeAce, a power metering system fitted to mountain bikes that monitors cyclists’ brake usage every time they ride. Well, it’s now available in a new and improved wireless format called PF2.
Like its hardwired predecessor, the BrakeAce PF2 setup consists of two strain gauge sensors that replace the existing brake adapters (bits between the caliper and the frame or fork) on the bike’s front and rear disc brakes. These brakes can be hydraulic or mechanical.
During each ride, sensors measure the modulation, intensity and duration of every braking event. This is done 1,000 times per second. In the case of PF2, that data is relayed wirelessly (via Bluetooth Low Energy) to an app on the rider’s smartphone.
After the ride is over, the cyclist uses the app to check the ride’s map. This map shows all braking events. Users will also receive a “flow score” for their ride and advice on how to improve that score and improve their performance by changing their braking habits.

Each sensor reportedly weighs 73 grams (2.6 ounces) and can be used for over 100 hours on a single charge of the lithium battery. BrakeAce inventor Dr Matt Miller says the PF2 system has been tested by professional riders at the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival and is being prepared for the New Zealand national competition.
The first limited edition of the BrakeAce PF2 setup can be pre-ordered from the company’s website and is priced at US$1,199 for a set of two sensors. The unit he will ship in June.
