HUD (heads-up display) technology is becoming increasingly common in cars and even motorcycle helmets, but is still largely unavailable to cyclists. However, that could change soon if SoulRS’s helmet-mounted HUD hits its crowdfunding goal.

A curved baseplate is attached to the front of the helmet via a double-sided adhesive pad, and a visor-style HUD module slides in and out of that plate’s slot as needed. This feature allows you to remove the HUD module to charge the battery or swap it back and forth between multiple baseplate equipped helmets.
When the user wants to use the display, simply flip the HUD screen down. Data from his Bluetooth-connected Apple or Android smartphone is projected onto a screen in the corner of the rider’s field of vision. The data is reportedly projected in such a way that riders don’t have to shift focus between the display and the road in front of them.

For simplicity, only 5 data points are displayed: date/time, incoming calls, received messages, current speed (measured by your phone’s GPS), and live navigation queue. The latter is especially convenient for bike commuters.
In its current functional prototype form, the water-resistant HUD module weighs 90 g (3.2 oz) and is claimed to run for a day on a single battery charge. The system is currently on a Kickstarter campaign, with a US$199 pledge getting him one. Planned retail price is $320.
