Samsung may launch a Tri-Fold device this year, the S23 FE isn’t happening

Another week on, another conflicting rumor about the death or resurrection of the mythical Samsung Fan Edition line. This time it’s bad news – apparently the Galaxy S23 FE isn’t going to happen after all.

Sad as it may be, on the other hand, the same source puts an incredibly interesting flip side to this rumor. This “may finally ship this year”. This is the typical “big if true” news, since we’ve basically had single-hinged foldables for the past few years.

Samsung may launch a tri-fold device this year, but no S23 FE yet

It promises to be a dual-hinged, three-part foldable, similar to some concepts Samsung Display showed at CES in January. It’s been a while since an all-new form factor joined the mobile world, so we’re excited. This is a problem.

So while the form factor itself may be new, the fact that it’s an extension (both literally and figuratively) of an existing one eliminates all the usual problems that arise when something completely new comes along. It means that there is a possibility that it can be avoided. In this case, just use additional hinges and more complicated screens. New, yes, never been done before. Also, yes, but not completely out of left field.
