Research shows dogs’ nutritional needs can be met with plants and supplements
Licca I
When I finally stopped eating meat, I realized I couldn’t stop buying meat. My boyfriend and his two teenage sons were both big fans and the two cats only ate meat. And I was afraid the boy would be pulled away, but not so much the cat. I knew there were vegan dog meals available, but I assumed they were suboptimal and that cats could do the same without losing a few of their nine lives. But the boys left home and the cats sadly passed away. I’m finally out of meat. And when I get my next cat, and possibly a dog, I’m considering making them meatless as well.
Not biologically impossible, there is increasing evidence that cats and dogs can be completely satisfied with a vegetable or vegan diet. Indeed, they may be healthier than those fed conventional pet food. Despite this, veterinarians continue to tell owners not to force their dogs and cats on plant-based diets, warning them that they can probably be unhealthy, cruel, and illegal. So what’s the truth about plant-eating pooches and moggies?
Cats, dogs, and their dinners are big business. In 2018, there were about 370 million pet cats and he said 470 million pet dogs in the world, which together gobble up $134 billion in food each year. And the pet food market is growing. In the UK, it increased by 17% over the five years to 2019.
