This past year has seen a lot of progress when it comes to turning Chromebooks into more than just devices for school and basic web browsing. At least the beta version of Steam is officially released so that you can play many of the best Steam games on ChromeOS without relying on Linux.
And now, one of the world’s most popular games is available to play. Microsoft-owned Mojang recently announced that you can now play Minecraft on Chromebooks. There are newer versions of the game on the Play Store, but downloading and installing Minecraft isn’t the easiest way to get started.
How to play Minecraft on your Chromebook
Before diving into the new world of Minecraft, Mojang outlined a few requirements that Chromebooks must meet.
- operating system: Chrome OS 111
- system architecture: 64-bit (x86_64, arm64-v8a)
- processor: Intel Celeron N4500, Intel i3-7130U, Mediatek T8183, Qualcomm SC7180, AMD Ryzen 3 3250C or above
- memory: 4GB of RAM
- depository: At least 1 GB of game installation, maps, and other files
If your Chromebook meets these requirements, here’s how to play Minecraft on your Chromebook.

4. After purchasing Minecraft, the download will start automatically.
5. Once downloaded, play button in list or search Mine Craft in the ChromeOS Launcher.

Minecraft on Chromebook is still in beta
There are a few things to keep in mind when playing Minecraft on your Chromebook. For one thing, this isn’t the same version of the game that’s been available on the Play Store for years. It’s called the ‘Early Access Version’ because it’s the first time we’ve actually seen Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on a Chromebook.
This is basically the same as the previous version available from the Play Store, but optimized for ChromeOS. However, it is still under active testing and development, so you should be aware of potential bugs.
For example, downloading this new version to my HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook sometimes caused the app to freeze. As such, you may not want to fight the ender dragon right away.
Conclusion
I can certainly understand why you would be annoyed by having to pay, another It’s a version of Minecraft and we think it’s worth it. Many of the best Chromebooks already meet the hardware requirements provided by Mojang, so it shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
The interesting part is that while this is still an “early access version”, it’s just a great example of how Chromebooks and ChromeOS have progressed. Unfortunately, Mojang has given no indication as to when Bedrock Edition will be available to everyone. But we will keep an eye on when that happens.
