Think about how early black-and-white film cameras worked. For example, I pointed the camera at a tree and pressed a button. This opened the shutter, allowing light to pass through the lens (or lenses) and project an image of the tree onto the film. Brownlee posted another video and said he replicated a test with similar results. He concluded that the details are a product of the camera’s AI software, not just the camera’s optics. The camera’s process, “basically the AI sharpens what it sees in the viewfinder to what it knows what the moon looks like,” he says in the video. Ultimately, he says, “what you get from your smartphone camera is not so much reality, but a computer interpretation of how you want reality to look.”
