Helmets are necessary for many sports, but Canadian materials engineer Albert Beyer believes they don’t provide enough protection for the back of the head. His solution to that problem is the “helmet crumpling zone” known as DCLR8.
According to Beyer’s own research, 68% of sports-related concussions are caused by impacts to the back of the athlete’s head.like a traditional helmet do Albert says he hasn’t done enough work to mitigate the effects of such rear impacts.

Attaches to the back of almost any kind of 3rd party helmet (but designed with hockey in mind). The device consists of her two parts, an adhesive-backed mount and a shock-absorbing “egg.”

The latter component consists of two carbon fiber bowl-shaped halves that are joined together to form a semi-flat sphere. A vent along the seam between the two halves allows trapped air to escape quickly within milliseconds when the sphere collapses.

A drop test conducted at the University of Alberta reported a 70% reduction in maximum load with the DCLR8. In addition, the device increased the duration of the impact by 100% and reduced its strength by dragging the impact over a longer period of time (average 16.6 ms).

DCLR8 is currently eligible for an Indiegogo campaign. Assuming it reaches production, it can be purchased with a pledge of $50 CAD (approximately $37 USD). The planned retail price is $64 CAD ($48 USD), with replacement eggs expected to sell for about $5. Beyer is also open to inquiries from manufacturers who want to incorporate this technology into their helmets.
