Congress is in turmoil. But at least the memes are good.
For those unfamiliar with political news, Republicans have failed to elect a Speaker in the House of Representatives and are shutting down business. Republicans have a majority in the House, which usually means that voting for the Speaker is a pre-determined format. However, he is nowhere near consensus, with six votes cast amidst the internal strife. A few right-wing supporters don’t want Kevin McCarthy, the candidate who threw a wrench into the Republican plan. He is nowhere near his 218 votes needed to win a majority.
Heading into Thursday, there were no clear signs that a resolution was imminent. Clearly, Democrats do not have the votes to elect their candidate, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries. McCarthy does not appear to have a vote and is unfazed. Congress is now one of his shrug emojis.
But the jokes about it are pretty great. There is considerable disgust from Democrats, especially given that McCarthy is courting the very people who are now sabotaging his leadership. And the meme did not disappoint.
There was a joke that it was like the NFL playoffs.
