When the first wave of coronavirus cases swept the world in early 2020, Siew Ng, a gastroenterologist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, expected the virus’ effects to spread beyond the body’s airways. She and her colleagues vividly remember her SARS her coronavirus outbreak in 2003, giving them some idea of what to expect from SARS-CoV-2. In particular, they expected many people to develop bowel problems.
