But I still saw these issues as disconnected from our daily lives. I thought they were concerns for and on behalf of fish, plants and bees, not us. I took for granted a home with clean air, plenty of water, enough food, and no risk of fire or flooding.

Back in the day, the early morning alarm became a deafening siren. While air pollution in the United States is declining, its impact is surging around the world. Today, more than 1 in 6 deaths worldwide are caused by air, water and soil pollution.

And then there is climate change. This is an invisible but destructive force that is wreaking havoc on a global scale. The Industrial Revolution ignited our unhealthy dependence on fossil fuels.But what we often don’t realize is that nearly 80% of his carbon dioxide2 Nearly 60 percent of all emissions from burning coal, gas, oil, and heat-trapping gases are released. ever since 1970. The choices I made in my own lifetime are the main reason why temperatures are currently rising at an unprecedented rate, turning the weather dice against us. Record heatwaves are stressing power grids and health systems, super cyclones are ravaging cities and refugee camps, wildfire smoke is choking the continent and floods are displacing millions.

The urgency and injustice of the climate crisis compelled me to become an atmospheric scientist. I believe it is the most immediate threat to our civilization and many of the myriad species with which we share this earth. But the ensuing climate change is an equally threatening crisis. It’s biodiversity loss. all life on earth.

The biodiversity crisis is also nothing new. Over the past four centuries, humans have driven at least 680 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish to extinction. But like climate change, the rate of impact is increasing. Since 1970, WWF has documented a nearly 70% decline in existing wildlife species populations. And across her more than eight million plant and animal species on Earth, the human-induced extinction rate is estimated to be tens to hundreds of times higher than the natural extinction rate. These numbers vary widely, as so many species have yet to be discovered. But enough is known about the impact of human activity on biodiversity that ecologists call the epoch we are in the “sixth extinction.”

But all too often, many of us still think and act the same way I did when I was younger. That is, we incorrectly assume that if the Earth’s ecosystems collapse, we can miraculously survive without the air, water, and vital resources they provide. This perspective puts us all at risk. Climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss are escalating to levels of crisis that threaten not only flora and fauna, but humanity itself. At stake is our collective survival.

Our ultimate goal is not just to solve these crises, but to do it for ourselves, our children, and everyone and everything we love on this planet. to secure a better future. But this better future can only be reached by overcoming the crises we have caused ourselves. Our ecosystem is literally a life support system. Without them, we would not be able to ensure a stable global food system and economy, let alone provide clean air and clean water for the planet’s eight billion people. Our well-being and the well-being of all life on earth are fundamentally linked.

But unlike other species, we have a choice. can see what’s going on. We know we are responsible. And catastrophes can still be prevented. But I don’t have much time. We cannot afford to deal with these crises with piecemeal solutions. From clean energy to educating women in low-income countries, we need comprehensive, multi-faceted strategies that address climate, pollution, biodiversity, health, poverty and other inequalities. now.

The stakes are high. Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, the world agreed to limit warming to “well below” 2 degrees Celsius, but that threshold is now 1.5 degrees Celsius after scientists quantified the risk of further warming. is set to Most recently, in December 2022, countries agreed to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It addresses the main drivers of biodiversity loss and calls for protecting 30 percent of land, oceans and freshwater by 2030.

Policies implemented since the Paris Agreement have already reduced projected warming by the end of the century from about 4.5 degrees Celsius to 2.8 degrees Celsius. That’s a good number, but it’s still not enough. No new fossil fuels will be developed for these ambitious plans to succeed. Greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced and ultimately eliminated through efficiency improvements, improved land use and farming practices, and the transition to clean energy. We must invest in nature, which has the potential to absorb up to a third of our carbon footprint. And countries should develop and implement their own National Biodiversity Action Plans to promote climate mitigation, resilience and biodiversity in low-income countries and major protected areas around the world, especially in the most vulnerable and globally representative countries.
