For some reason, the vote for Speaker of the House has continued to become more and more of a fiasco this week.
We wrote about it after six failed votes for Republican candidate Kevin McCarthy, and it proved far from the end of the road. He was adamant that McCarthy should be denied the role of Speaker in the House.By the time this article was written Friday afternoon, there had been a total of 13 votes, with McCarthy hadn’t done it yet The winning threshold of 218 votes has been exceeded. It promised to be midnight for Republicans, and it was still unclear if the barriers would be broken.
Republicans have a majority in the House, but seem to disagree on the Speaker’s vote. McCarthy, trying to win the role himself, gave serious concessions to the most right-wing members of the party. The formalities are usually a mix of debacles, food fights and hilarious farce.
Needless to say, the online jokes and memes about everything were great.
