Android will soon let you switch between Spotify Connect speakers from the lock screen

Android 13 introduces a new way to switch audio playback between wireless speakers using a new lock screen widget and updated notifications. While this currently works for YouTube and YouTube Music, Google and Spotify have announced that they are working together to enable it for Spotify Connect devices as well.

Our team is also working to make this feature smarter and easier to navigate between different locations with different speakers. Imagine you started listening to a podcast in your car. When you arrive at your destination and get out of your car, notifications pop up and you can quickly switch to listening on headphones. Then, when you get home, you’ll see the same notification again, offering to switch to your TV or speakers.

There are three layers of technology that make this work. First, the smartphone uses his Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and UWB to detect nearby devices. A second layer recognizes the capabilities of these devices to determine which one is the most suitable for the content being played. The third and final layer coordinates the behavior of the entire system based on interactions with these devices.
