After years of grappling with various regulatory issues, Virgin Orbit says it is finally ready to fly its LauncherOne rocket out of the UK.

This “Start Me Up” mission to low earth orbit will carry satellites from his seven customers in both the US and UK.
The air-launched mission has received considerable attention in the UK as it is touted as the UK’s first orbital launch. In fact, this will be the first orbital satellite launch from the UK or Western Europe. However, it will not be a vertical launch from mainland Britain. Spaceports capable of such launches are under construction at several locations around the country, but are probably not ready for orbital launches this year. Unlike the company, Virgin Orbit’s technology was developed, manufactured and tested in the USA.
This did not dampen the enthusiasm of supporters of a horizontal-launch spaceport in Cornwall.
“I feel confident, focused and ready to handle whatever happens,” said Spaceport Cornwall head Melissa Thorpe at a press conference on Sunday. We are so excited, the public can’t wait for the UK to come and join their exclusive launch club because it makes them feel good.”
Thorpe is part of a team that has been working for eight years to bring horizontal launch capability to Spaceport Cornwall on the grounds of Newquay Airport, a former Royal Air Force base. In the meantime, officials from the Spaceport, the British Space Agency and Virgin Orbit have been working to address regulatory concerns regarding rocket handling in Cornwall and launches in international waters southwest of Ireland.
Virgin Orbit had hoped to launch the mission in the fall of 2022, but ongoing paperwork issues ultimately pushed the mission back to early 2023. These delays mean Virgin Orbit will only be able to launch his LauncherOne rocket twice in 2022.
Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart said the company was working to obtain a launch license in the UK, saying, “When we took advantage of this opportunity, we knew this would not be easy.
At a press conference on Sunday, officials expressed hope that the launch would be the first of a series of regular Virgin Orbit missions from the UK.
“I’m thrilled to be here today,” Hart said. “We are excited about the future. We will probably come back later this year to launch again and hopefully set the rhythm. We are part of the fabric of the space community here in the UK but globally. I would like to become a club. That is our goal as a company, and I think there are great opportunities.”
But how much of the infrastructure that was flown to Spaceport Cornwall cosmic girl Aircraft and LauncherOne refueling operations will remain on-site after this mission. It’s also unlikely that Virgin Orbit will fly another mission out of the UK for at least the next 12 months (if not much longer).
