Shermet is the result of a partnership between Kashi Kagaku Kogyo and Sarufutsu Village, a fishing village that produces approximately 40,000 tons (36,287 tons) of waste scallop shells each year.Although there is Several A potential use for that waste is that most seashells reportedly just sit in a stinky pile for long periods of time.
This method was developed by Professor Hiroshi Uyama of Osaka University. After sterilizing seashells by boiling, they are pulverized into calcium carbonate powder, which is then mixed with waste plastic powder to make pellets. These ‘Shellstic’ bioplastic he pellets are subsequently poured into helmet molds and heated to melt.
When the bioplastic cools and hardens, it becomes a helmet with a ribbed design inspired by scallop shells. Its design, along with the calcium carbonate content, is said to make the helmet about 33% stronger than it would otherwise be. emissions are said to be about 36% lower.
Shellmet is primarily intended for use by fishermen, and pilots of the application are expected to begin this spring (Northern Hemisphere). Helmets may also be provided for use in situations where helmets are required, such as during disasters. Safety standard certification is currently in progress.
