Green Hydrogen, the Renewable Energy Set to Transform Industry and Transportation

green hydrogenis still in its early stages, but is set to become one of the mainstays of the new renewable energy economy. Unlike other alternatives such as gray or blue hydrogen, this type of hydrogen production has zero carbon footprint. An example of this green fuel is the Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca initiative. The initiative is a green hydrogen plant that will be operational in the second half of 2021. The project will be located on a site owned by cement company CEMEX and will integrate his two solar power plants built by ACCIONA. An electrolysis system supplied by Cummins (formerly Hydrogenics) in partnership with Energus, IDAE, CEMEX itself, and with REDEXIS and others. The initiative is part of the European Union’s FCH-JU (Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Venture) strategic plan.

Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca uses solar energy to run an electrolysis process that produces oxygen and hydrogen from water. The produced hydrogen is compressed and stored. Among the main beneficiaries are not only the tourism industry, but also the industrial sector and urban mobility. As pointed out by Belén Linares, Director of Energy Innovation at ACCIONA, green hydrogen will make a significant contribution to energy-intensive sectors such as hotels, industry and urban transport. It also reduces the carbon footprint of fertilizer production, enables energy storage from solar panels and wind turbines, and achieves stable renewable output. Additionally, as part of the project, a hydrogen fueling station will be installed to supply buses, cars and small vans in the Balearic Islands.

“The Power to Green Hydrogen Mallorca project should save 20,700 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.”

In total, the reduction in carbon footprint is estimated to reach 20,700 tons per year. Rafael Mateo, CEO of ACCIONA Energy, said:

Blockchain to ensure energy traceability

Blockchain technology will also play an important role in this renewable energy effort. The project will therefore be complemented by the use of GreenH2chain®, the world’s first blockchain platform that guarantees the traceability of green hydrogen. Companies using this digital system will monitor decarbonization and obtain a green certification system. Finally, the platform provides a record of consumption and operating costs.

What is the difference between gray, blue and green hydrogens?

Hydrogen is a colorless gas, but the way it is produced is color coded. The most important variations are gray, blue and green. first, gray hydrogen It is based on the conversion of natural gas and its use as a fuel does not emit greenhouse gases, but its production involves carbon emissions. Secondly, blue hydrogen We choose to capture and store carbon dioxide. This will reduce emissions, but not eliminate them. finally, green hydrogen It uses renewable energy in the electrolysis process and produces no emissions at any stage of its life cycle. The main challenge at the moment is to reduce the cost of producing green hydrogen to make it a truly renewable alternative. This type of fuel is expected to be cost-competitive to produce by 2030, and by 2040 it should cost the same as producing from fossil fuels.
