Oculus Quest, aka Meta Quest VR, is being retired, with support and many features discontinuing on March 5th. Three-year-old headsets will no longer receive security updates and various functional applications such as joining parties and using Horizon Home. You’ll probably still have access to the game, but considering your achievements might change that decision.
It took me over a year for Meta to realize that forcing users to create and use Facebook accounts to be able to access Quest VR content was a bad idea. Of course, all they’ve really done is change it to require a Meta account, and for those who already follow the rules, it remains to be seen what difference that makes.
There have been arguments that the original Quest VR headset hardware was outdated by the time it was launched, and dropping support would allow Meta to focus on a new $1500 headset. It seems a little inadequate as a piece of clothing, and it’s unlikely that people will upgrade to newer VR headsets. The cost to participate is high and purchasing seems to be a very short-term investment. 3 years of support is the pathetic side.
Meta Quest 3 won’t be available until next year. They don’t seem to want the Metaverse to succeed.
