How to enable or disable always on display
When you receive your iPhone 14 Pro and complete setup, you’ll find that the Always-On display is enabled by default. If you decide that this feature is not for you and would like to disable it, follow the steps below.
- Open Configuration and find screen & Luminance.
- Then scroll down and tap everytime upon screen subsection.
- On the next screen, toggle off everytime upon screen.
If you change your mind and want to use this feature, repeat steps 1 and 2, then toggle it on everytime upon screen.
How to customize always-on display
As I mentioned at the beginning, when Apple introduced the Always-On Display, the feature wasn’t subtle. It effectively introduced a dim version of the lock screen where the wallpaper and notifications are always there.
In iOS 16.2, Apple updated this feature with two new toggles. show wallpaper When show notificationTurning the former off replaces the wallpaper with a black screen, turning the latter off removes the notifications, leaving just the widget and the clock.

Always on display is getting better with each update
At boot, the always-on display’s negative impact on battery life was significant. Still, with each update, Apple has enhanced this feature, making it especially useful for live activities. This has also been improved. Hopefully Apple can keep iterating and reach an endpoint where this feature is smoothly integrated into the user experience without causing battery anxiety.
