The advent of the compact disc in the early 1980s was predicted to spell the end of the vinyl record, but the format not only survived, it’s selling well. His CoolGeek from Hong Kong aims to make your collection stand out with a retro style record spinner.
The design studio hopes the homage to the golden age of vinyl will follow the CS-01 all-in-one music system to its Kickstarter success, and spinning vinyl will be perfectly visible in the process. In fact, CoolGeek UV-printed his eye-catching ink splash design onto an acrylic platter so that the unit would instantly become a style focal point in any room, even when a record wasn’t playing.
Dubbed the VS-01, the unit features a NIDEC silent high-speed motor “along with state-of-the-art closed-loop control technology” for 33 and 45 rpm playback speeds (selectable on the back). The user also manually raises and lowers the carbon fiber tonearm (ending in an Ortofon OM 5E cartridge), but the system automatically stops when the stylus reaches the end groove.

Rock a built-in sound system consisting of a 5W tweeter and a 30W mid-bass thumper powered by a 30W + 30W amplifier. The system also incorporates Bluetooth 5.0, allowing users to listen through wireless headphones or speakers, and includes a line-out port for cable-connecting the VS-01 to hi-fi gear. The unit also works as a Bluetooth speaker.
The chassis rests on rather attractive vibration-damping cone-shaped feet, plus two damping systems help dampen minor sway. Volume and system controls are via backlit knobs to the right of the retro speaker grill on the front. And that’s about it.
Kickstarter pledges for the VS-01 system currently start at US$599, and it’s estimated that if all goes according to plan in the already-funded campaign, shipments will begin in March. This is by no means the first or only vertical turntable we’ve seen, but it’s certainly the most colorful.
