Rollkers put a motorized moving sidewalk under your feet

When walking on an airport “moving walkway,” it’s tempting to pretend that you can easily walk at superhuman speeds. Rollkers are designed to give you the feeling of walking down the city streets.

Created by the French startup of the same name, Rollkers take the form of roller skate-like devices that attach to the user’s existing shoes.

However, instead of simply having wheels on the bottom, there are motorized rollers covered with rubber tracks like conveyor belts. Rollkers are bent in the middle to facilitate normal walking, so each he has two tracks (one front and one rear).

Rollkers are claimed to be compatible with most shoes as long as they are not high heeled or too bulky.

On-board sensors and other electronics detect the wearer’s current walking speed and activate motors to double that speed. Up to 7 mph (11 km/h). This means it only “rolls” when the user is walking. If the user is just standing, Rollkers will not move the user forward.

Additionally, sensors are always able to determine where each roll car is in its stride, so motor power is adjusted accordingly to keep the user stable. They reportedly weigh about 4.5 kg (10 lbs) each and should provide about 30 minutes of use per charge of the lithium-ion battery.

The company now wants to license the technology to third-party manufacturers, which will actually produce the Rollker, according to representatives. Estimated retail price is approximately $700 USD.
