scrap rider is brought to you by Spanish developer Games For Tutti and published by French publisher Microids. scrap rider Released on January 9th, is available on PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch.

We’d consider the PC version, which comes in at £14.99 / $17.99 and requires 4GB of storage.

As we know it’s the end of the world.

Set in an apocalyptic wasteland, surround the cyberpunk-inspired city of Uber City, scrap rider is a pixel art adventure game that combines side-scrolling action with point-and-click style gameplay. That’s when you’re not scratching your head with that reference.

You play as Rast, a member of the famed Scrap Riders. Outlaw biker gang of misfits. You start in the Rasts’ quarters, wearing nothing but underwear, gloves, and a cute little red neckerchief.

The main character, Rust, is standing in a dark room wearing only underwear, gloves and a red neckerchief.
Clothing is not optional, Rast!

Now let’s talk about the controls for the point ‘n click segment of the game. The game is designed to be played with a controller, but you can also use a keyboard if you prefer. WASD stands for movement and IJKL stands for the four buttons usually found on a gamepad. Solve the first puzzle using your newfound skills. You will need to find game cartridges and adapters so that you can use them with your SEN system. This also leads to my initial dissatisfaction with the game. automation.

See, as part of this, we need to find the code to unlock the locker. After getting the code, click on the locker. No need to enter any code, it’s automated and an adapter is provided. Then you need to open the inventory and combine the adapter with the cartridge. I’m not proposing to automate this. Deciding which objects need to be combined is a classic feature of point-and-click games. No, what I did issue was using an item combined with your SEN system, stand near the SEN system, open your inventory, select the combined item, then press must be used in the system.

It’s a small complaint, but I felt a little old. Stand near an object and press to manipulate it. See, you’ve used an item! At first I thought there might be some sort of puzzle that I needed to solve for the item to use. But no, the game always makes it clear which item you need to use.

kick ass? Kill them all? Brawler? Who cares, let me punch!

After completing this puzzle, you will be introduced to a self-aware tutorial for beat ’em gameplay. scrap rider.

Last standing in the combat tutorial zone.read text box "This should be a classic tutorial that teaches you how to play."
Very meta, very deep.

The two weapons available to you are fists and guns. Ammunition is scarce in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, so you’ll be fighting with your fists most of the time. The combat portion of the game is actually pretty fun and should come naturally to anyone who’s played side-scrolling action games of any kind before. I’ll admit, I’ve been playing a lot of yakuza lately, scrap rider It has high attack power and grabs it. It was a lot of fun. Yay muscle memory!

After this, you are informed that a rival gang has stolen the item you were tasked with delivering. Then you’ll be sent on the first quest of bar fighting, gang politics, corporate intrigue, and non-stop pop on his cultural reference journey. seriously. See, I love good pop culture references. I use them in my own writing. But there are so many references I can take before I sigh in a coma. scrap rider To be straight, it makes me ask when does homage become good old plagiarism?

A comparison of the Ana de Armas hologram JOI scene in Blade Runner 2049 and a very similar hologram in the Scrap Riders set piece.
Hmm, haven’t we met somewhere before?

Now I know I was complaining quite a bit scrap rider Unfortunately it’s not finished yet as the developers use translation tools and not localization companies. But we’ll get to that later. I felt the need to repeat this process. scrap rider It’s very fun. There is a joke about all member berries that scientists split atoms and forgot how to put them back together.

The game works well, and each area has unique and beautiful set pieces to explore. I enjoy interacting with the cast. Even his 50N1, a sarcastic robot guide, whose sole purpose is basically to remind you what to do if you forget, is resentful of the question. There’s enough variety in combat between regular combos, special attacks, and gunfire to never get boring, and boss fights become real threats. Granted, Rast himself as a character is a bit two-dimensional and pun intended, but scrap rider It’s a solid game. Needs a little polish.

Rast is at a bar and after the player tells him to touch the girl he responds with "Touching a woman without her consent? What century is this?"
Rast understands three things. Fight, pop culture, consent.

Is it all really that bad?

“So basically you’re just being picky, Vinno?” I hear you say. And to be fair, yes most. Some of my complaints may not bother you at all. They are certainly not important enough to be overlooked. However, the dialogue was incredibly jarring, and for a game with such a lot of dialogue, that was a problem. The strange conversation seemed out of place. It’s a small team, which I can forgive, and honestly, it’s just funny most of the time.

The main problem was that the text boxes were too small. Not only is this not great from an accessibility point of view, it also results in text boxes not displaying full sentences. It throws you off completely and takes you out of it. When you press the next button, you should put the last word in each text box in the head.It may sound obvious, but this was the thing that haunted me the most during my time. scrap riderMake the damn text box bigger.

Make the textbox bigger! Also a point for more references.

Now, if there’s one thing I didn’t complain about, it was the soundtrack. Everything fits and complements this area beautifully. I liked it

final thoughts

Yes, the pop culture references may be a little heavy, but when it comes to the game set 800 years later, it’s nice to know that the classic has really stood the test of time. He only had one bug that happened when he tried to change areas by manipulating his bike. Rast was on the other side of the bike and couldn’t move to start the animation. It probably won’t surprise you to hear that it’s not a demanding game. My FPS were consistently in the hundreds. It looks amazing, the pixel art is beautiful, and the soundtrack just pulls it all together.

It’s a nice blend of side-scrolling action and point-and-click gameplay. The point-and-click segments balance being infuriating as games like Broken Sword trying to figure out how to move on, and walking his simulator like titles from Telltale Games . It’s not the longest game. It only takes 3-5 hours to pass. But it feels like it’s just as long as it needs to be.

scrap rider is a charming little title that is a little rough around the edges and was a lot of fun to play. Check it out if you’re into side-scrolling action, point-and-click, or both.
