Dark Sky is done. Here’s how Apple’s Weather app succeeded it

In September, weather app Dark Sky disappeared from Apple’s App Store. For fans of the app, it came as no surprise: Apple acquired the app in his 2020 and it was only a matter of time before it was shut down.

The deadline of December 31, 2022 has now passed and the app no longer works for those who already have it installed.

The new version of Weather was released as part of Apple’s iOS 16 upgrade and was a decent successor to Dark Sky. The Weather app was also first introduced to his Apple’s iPad lineup with iPadOS 16. In a recent post on his website, Apple outlines Weather’s features inherited from Dark Sky.

According to Apple, the latest version of Weather includes features such as highly accurate precipitation forecasts, hourly forecasts for the next 10 days, and high-resolution weather maps. The map comes with several different overlays such as precipitation, air quality, and temperature. To change the currently displayed overlay, tap the bottom button in the upper right corner of the map view.

The post also notes that Apple’s weather forecasts are “hyperlocal,” accurate to 0.001° in latitude and longitude.

“This resolution is used to generate predictions for blocks as well as your town,” Apple said. “It can also notify you in minutes when the precipitation will start.”

Your app must be able to send notifications for this to work. This can be enabled from the menu button in the top right corner of the Location List View.

Not all of Weather’s advanced features are available everywhere. See here for a list of features available in different countries/regions.

Weather is available on devices running iOS 16+, iPadOS 16+, and macOS 13 Ventura+.
