Threadripper PRO 5000 Arrives

Introducing the Threadripper PRO 5000

Today we are finally able to announce the newly refreshed HD150 featuring the Threadripper PRO 5000-WX series. With the popularity of his previous iterations of Threadripper among professional clients such as content creators, designers, animators and digital FX professionals, it is very exciting to be able to offer the latest evolution of the platform. Check out the full release here, or learn more about what makes the Threadripper PRO 5000 unique.

What is Threadripper PRO 5000?

The Threadripper PRO 5000 is the latest version of AMD’s popular Threadripper workstation platform. Like the Threadripper PRO 3000 series before it (AMD never released a 4000 series), the 5000 series uses the WRX80 chipset motherboard. The same boards that supported the 3000 series will also support the 5000 even with a BIOS update, but some additional partners such as MSI and Asrock have also added board options for this launch. More on them later.

Threadripper PRO 5000 is specifically designed for highly threaded applications such as computational fluid dynamics, professional video editing and visual effects. The main advantages of this platform are:

  • Up to 64 cores, 128 threads at 4.5Gz Boost – ideal for both thread-intensive and frequency-constrained applications
  • Up to 2TB DDR4-3200 ECC 8-channel RAM – for seamless performance on even the most complex tasks and visuals
  • Zen 3 Architecture – Improved IPC With AMD’s Latest 7nm Die
  • AMD Shadow Stack – Modern Professional Security Features for the Modern World

Overclockable platform?

The OG TRX40 Threadripper had headroom for overclocking, but the PRO 3000 series didn’t. This changes with the Threadripper PRO 5000, but only with the aforementioned new MSI or Asrock motherboards. Some of these overclock settings are still being validated, so keep an eye on future posts for more details on just how high they can go.

Who is Threadripper PRO for?

The use cases for PRO workstations are fairly broad, but are primarily people who need a system for use in an enterprise environment where PRO technology is advantageous, or who have highly threaded applications. This includes areas such as architecture, oil/gas, machine learning, VFX, scientific research, and simulation.
