Smartphones with large internal screens that fold across a hinge for gaming, watching movies, or improving productivity have been available for some time, and we’ve seen the slide concept expand display real estate as well. Samsung Display now combines the two for Flex Hybrid.
From the available renders, we might be forgiven for imagining that the Flex Hybrid is being pitched for future smartphones, but Samsung Display is confident that the combination of foldable and sliding display technology will be the next wrap. We believe it will be prototyped at the top.
The folding part of the display formula is on the left side of the concept. Similar to Samsung’s Fold and Flip smartphones, when opened across the hinge, users are met with a 10.5-inch OLED screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio. But if you need more, you can extend the display area to 12.4 inches diagonal at 16:10 thanks to the slide-out screen on the right.

Detailed specifications haven’t been shared at this early stage, but the flexible concept is on display at CES 2023 and could be especially useful for mobile workers who are short on space.
The “Smart Mobile Devices of the Future” adds two Flex displays that were first unveiled as part of the Intel Innovation day one keynote last September.

The Flex Slidable Solo only slides from one side of the display, while the Flex Slideable Duet extends to both sides. In any case, the user starts with his OLED panel of 13/14 inches and increases it to 17.3 inches “for multitasking purposes, playing games and watching movies.”
