Qi2: Everyone’s MagSafe
MagSafe uses magnets to align and secure your device to the charger, ensuring a stable connection and efficient charging. And now, thanks to Apple, this technology has been integrated into the Qi wireless charging standard. This means that not only iPhones, but also Android devices and other devices can benefit from the features provided by MagSafe technology.
The Qi2 (pronounced “chee-two”) standard features a similar MagSafe-like magnetic power profile to ensure that phones and other rechargeable battery-powered mobile products are a perfect match for charging devices. This not only improves energy efficiency, but also increases charging speed.
Qi2 is the future of wireless charging speeds that not only improve the user experience for millions of consumers, but are safe, energy efficient, and won’t drain battery life or damage users’ phones. It is expected to drive significant improvements. It also helps reduce landfill waste by eliminating the need to replace wired chargers due to broken plugs or damaged cords.
Initially, the Qi2 standard will offer wireless charging up to 15W, with a potential higher wattage version in the future. After that, we will start developing higher wattage versions for faster charging speeds.
WPC says Qi2-certified smartphones and chargers will be available in time for the 2023 holiday season. New smartphones launching later this year, such as the iPhone 15 series, Pixel 8 series and Pixel Fold, are likely to feature new wireless charging standards. The Qi2 standard is expected to replace its predecessor Qi in the rapidly expanding wireless charging market, which is expected to sell around 1 billion devices worldwide in 2023.
