AMD RDNA 3 Infuses Laptops: Radeon RX 7000 Mobile Revealed

Increased efficiency will greatly benefit mobile applications, so it’s no surprise that AMD is aggressive in introducing new architectures to the laptop market. As part of its CES 2023 announcement, AMD unveiled its first RDNA 3-based Radeon GPUs for laptops. There are four separate models, but all four are based on the same silicon base (codenamed Navi 33).

rx7600m

First up is the Radeon RX 7600M and its “XT” form. These are RDNA 3 GPUs with 28 and 32 compute units respectively, resulting in 1,792 and 2,048 shader counts. AMD didn’t disclose the clock rates, but said the GPU could produce 28 and 32 TFLOPs of FP32 computing. In these specs, these GPUs don’t take into account performance vs. mathematics, so we asked AMD for further clarification.

AMD’s spec table (reproduced at the end of this post) shows that these GPUs use 16 Gbps (for RX 6700M) or 18 Gbps (for ‘XT’) GDDR6 memory. 8GB is a good amount for such a mid-range GPU, with relatively high transfer rates giving memory bandwidths of 256GB/s and 288GB/s. That’s a solid spec for a 1080p game these engines are meant to handle.

7600m benchmark

A company representative said the Radeon RX 7600M XT could approach the performance of the mobile Geforce RTX 3080 in some tests. That may be true, but the company’s own numbers compare the new GPU to the laptop-powered 8 GB version of his GeForce RTX 3060 and 12 GB desktop version.

AMD’s newer parts generally have the upper hand in these numbers, but laptop GPU performance is often as much about power budget and cooling as processor configuration. Since we don’t know the power consumption or the test environment, we can’t draw any specific conclusions until we bring a commercial machine to the test.

rx7000s

In a slightly unusual product naming decision, the other two products based on Navi 33 are the Radeon RX 7700S and RX 7600S. These seem to be just slightly tighter power limits applied to the RX 7600M XT and RX 7600M.

AMD already uses the ‘S’ suffix to denote GPUs with optimized performance for low power, low thermal budget configurations. In that sense, it’s similar to how NVIDIA used to use the Max-Q brand.

If you have any questions, we are happy to explain. The Radeon RX 7700S is a slightly slower, lower power version of the Radeon RX 7600M XT, and the Radeon RX 7600S is a slightly slower, lower power version of the Radeon RX 7600M. Did it help?

7700s bench

AMD promises “1080p high FPS gaming in Thin & Light,” which sounds like a promising prospect. After all, hardcore PC gamers scoff at his 1080p resolution, but it looks better on smaller laptop displays. The performance numbers for the Radeon RX 7700S in the presented benchmarks are about the same as his RX 7600M numbers above, which is probably not surprising given the fact that it’s basically the same GPU.

AMD smart laptop performance technology refined

All four of these are “AMD Advantage” models. That means it comes with AMD hardware for both CPU and GPU. This also means you can take advantage of all of AMD’s “smart” technologies such as Smartshift and SmartAccess.

smart shift RSR

Speaking of Smartshift, a new mode is on the way known as Smartshift RSR. RSR is probably “Radeon Super Resolution”, a fancy name for GPU upscaling done using FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) at the driver level. Essentially, running the game at a lower resolution will cause the GPU to use his FSR to upscale the game to the display resolution for better performance with similar visual fidelity.

Smartshift RSR is a new hybrid graphics mode that does all the rendering on the fast discrete GPU and sends it to the integrated GPU for upscaling before displaying it on screen. This offloads the upscaling of the discrete GPU, which theoretically improves gaming performance, but if your laptop contains a MUX that connects the GPU and its display directly, how does that work? It will be interesting to see how this works in practice, but it certainly looks promising.

AMD’s Full Mobile GPU Lineup for 2023

Finally, here’s the full specs table for AMD’s mobile GPUs this year. The new chip solution is clearly in a white box. As AMD points out, the power limit here doesn’t take into account the additional 25 watts the GPU can gain on AMD Advantage laptops by using Smartshift to siphon power from the system’s CPU. . So the Radeon RX 7600M XT could be a 145W GPU.

When asked when AMD will see Navi 33 on the desktop, AMD declined to answer. Unfortunately, affordable GPUs like this are exactly what the desktop GPU market needs right now. Hopefully the company can slap these GPUs into his PC graphics card sooner or later.

summary

If you like the look of Navi 33, you don’t have to wait long. According to AMD, laptops with these GPUs should start appearing in February along with the Dragon Range mobile processors.
