The title says it all. From now on, turn-by-turn navigation on Wear OS smartwatches works even if your phone isn’t connected to the watch. However, an internet connection is still required – this is not off-line navigation. That means only his Wear OS smartwatches with LTE support (and associated carrier plans) can take advantage of this feature virtually anywhere in the world, as long as there’s a network signal.

On the other hand, even if your Wear OS smartwatch doesn’t have LTE connectivity, you can still use turn-by-turn Google Maps navigation without a phone, as long as your watch is connected to a Wi-Fi network. How this can actually be used in practice remains to be seen, as Wi-Fi networks aren’t known to move around much, but “navigation” implies a lot of movement.
Still, the feature is now live and you can take advantage of turn-by-turn navigation for Maps while leaving your phone behind. It’s a step in the right direction.
