Monkeypox cases in the West plummet due to the rapid deployment of a vaccine targeting the most at-risk populations, making it one of the biggest public health successes of 2022.

In early May, the virus, recently renamed mpox by the World Health Organization (WHO), was identified outside endemic countries in West and Central Africa.
