Virgin Orbit ushers in a new era of British spaceflight, but we’ll have to wait a little longer.
The first LauncherOne mission, named “Start Me Up” after the Rolling Stones’ 1981 truck, flew without incident from Cornwall Airport Newquay (now also known as Spaceport Cornwall) in England on Monday night. was launched.

If the mission is successful, it will be the first-ever satellite launch from mainland Britain and the first commercial launch from Western Europe. This will also be Virgin Orbit’s first international launch following its US success in 2021.
According to Virgin, “The mission of these satellites is to improve life on earth, including reducing the environmental impact of production, combating illegal human trafficking, smuggling, terrorism, and numerous national security functions. It covers a wide range of activities with a purpose.”
Although not in orbit, Virgin Orbit’s launch from Britain marks a milestone for British spaceflight. Scotland and Wales are building more spaceports, operated by the government’s British Space Agency, as part of their national space strategy.
It’s not a great moment for Virgin, though. CNBC reports that Virgin Orbit’s stock has plunged as much as 30% in after-hours trading after the rocket failed to reach orbit.
