in the box
The box has a relatively larger case than the previously launched XM4. The case includes an elegant looking headset, charging cable and 3.5mm audio cable.
design
Unlike others, the new Sony WH-1000XM5 doesn’t follow the look and design of its predecessor. The new Sony WH-1000XM5 has a sleek and clean design that has a very clean and aesthetic appeal and while wearing it outside it got a lot of attention from people passing by.
Unlike its XM4 predecessor, the new Sony WH-1000XM5’s ear cups do not fold inwards. The company uses synthetic leather cushions on the earcups and headbands. The ear cups are very smartly designed to comfortably fit any size ear. The headphones weigh relatively less than his Sennheiser Momentum 4, which I reviewed a few days ago.
The company has opted for only two buttons on its new SONY headset. A power button and a toggle button for ambient mode and noise cancellation located on the left earcup. The right earcup has all the touch control functions, swiping up increases the volume and swiping down decreases the volume. Hold the center of the right earcup to activate the voice assistant. You can also swipe back and forth to change tracks, and double-tap the center to pause/resume a track. Covering the right earcup also activates an environment awareness mode that lets in sounds from the outside world. At the bottom of the right earcup is a Type-C port for charging the headset.
Connectivity and control
The new Sony WH-1000XM5 pairs easily with Android and iOS devices. Initially, we paired it with our Android phone via Bluetooth, but for a better control and sound experience we recommend downloading the Sony Headphones connect app. It can connect to Bluetooth-enabled devices via codecs, but surprisingly the company omits support for aptX.
The left earcup also has a 3.5mm audio jack that can be used to connect a headset to your device. With this app you can take advantage of ANC optimization, 360 reality audio and custom equalizer features.
The app allows you to choose between full noise cancellation that blocks out all external sounds, ambient sound mode that lets you hear your surroundings especially when walking on the road, or OFF mode that shuts out ANC completely. You can choose. Responsive EQ boosts bass and can be adjusted to your liking. The headset can also learn about your daily life by tracking your usage behavior and adjust accordingly according to your current environment, such as switching to ambient sound mode while walking.
The new Sony WH-1000XM5 has an improved voice assistant. Alexa and Google Assistant can be activated hands-free with their respective trigger commands. Voice assistants can answer calls, dial numbers, control music, and more.
audio quality
The new Sony WH-1000XM5 comes with a new integrated processor V1 and 30mm drivers while the XM4 has 40mm drivers which at first made me think about the sound quality the new Sony XM5 offers but the sound quality is the toll It doesn’t cost much, but it’s better than before. Sony uses both the LDAC codec and DSEE Extreme support in sync to ensure that the sound produced by his new XM5 is of the highest quality. LDAC automatically compresses and decompresses music to give you significantly more wireless bandwidth than a typical Bluetooth connection.
DSEE Extreme squeezes out a little more detail by applying an AI upscaling algorithm to restore some of the lost audio data. The sound frequencies are perfectly aligned and smooth, ensuring your ears are not stressed by sound frequency deviations. The sound produced maintained a clean texture, and everything from highs to lows was noticeable. We liked the sound output, and the bass produced was top-notch quality.
ANC
The new Sony WH-1000XM5 has one of the best ANC within the flagship segment as we experienced better ANC with the Sony WH-1000XM5 compared to the Sennheiser Momentum 4 we reviewed previously. , cancels out all external noise/sounds and captivates you.Sound experience with 8 microphones in the headset.
call
The new Sony WH-1000XM5 has improved call capabilities compared to its predecessor. Call quality is very good and his new XM5 is one of the best headsets that offer better quality. The call experience is enhanced by Sony’s precision voice pickup technology, which uses the headset’s four beamforming microphones and AI-powered noise reduction, plus wind noise reduction for clear call quality. increase. The headset also does wonders for keeping unwanted noise and wind out during calls.
battery
The latest Sennheiser Momentum 4 has a battery life of 60 hours, while the new Sony WH-1000XM5 has a battery life of 30 hours. While using the new Sony WH-1000XM5, I was able to use the headset for 30 hours on a single charge. In other cases, the headphones lasted up to 31-32 hours, exceeding the aforementioned limits. The headset can be used for 40-42 hours with ANC disabled. The company has also increased the charging speed so that the headset is fully charged within his 1:00-1:15 hours.
Conclusion
The latest Sony WH-1000XM5 is one of the best ANC headsets present in the flagship segment priced at Rs 34,990. Smartly designed, his XM5 doesn’t miss a feature that puts it behind its competitors. The sound quality is top notch and the bass levels are very good. In terms of battery power, it lags behind the Sennheiser Momentum 4, but dominates in other sections.
