our verdict
The Dyson Purifier HP09 Hot & Cool Formaldehyde may be one of the most expensive water purifiers, but the added heating and cooling capabilities in a small package make it the only product you need all year round.
Dyson is a household name not only in the world of vacuum cleaners, but more recently in the world of air purification, and the top-end Dyson purifier HP09 Hot + Cool Formaldehyde is the pinnacle of that collection.
The HP09 not only purifies a room, it can also generate plumes of hot or cold air on command. Most impressively, it is one of the very few purifiers on the market that can break down formaldehyde, and it does so in a fairly compact package.
catch? He is also one of the most expensive water filters in the Dyson collection. But there’s a way to justify its top-end price, with an impressive feature set and excellent performance.
design and build
- Dyson signature design
- fairly compact footprint
- Curved remote attaches with magnets
The Dyson Purifier HP09 Hot+Cool Formaldehyde is instantly recognizable as a Dyson fan and boasts the same design philosophy as previous entries in Dyson’s bladeless fan collection. With its elegant design and complementary color scheme, the fan stands out from the sea of tower fans and comes in gorgeous white, silver and bronze/gold combinations that look great in any room.
Shorter than the 1005mm tall Dyson Purifier Cool Autoreact, at just 764mm, it doesn’t take up much space with its relatively compact 200 x 248mm footprint. So if you don’t want to put it on the floor, you can just put it on your desk or table and the 1.8m cable will give you space between it and the nearest plug.

The entire system sits on a rotating platform that rotates up to 350 degrees to heat, cool or purify an entire room rather than a specific area, in true Dyson form and completely silent when moving. No annoying squeaks found in cheap fans here.
You can use the included remote to lock it in place, or use the app to select the specific angle you want to face, but we’ll get to the app in a bit. You can also tilt it up and down to attach it. This is a plus compared to some Dyson purifiers in the collection.
The iconic bladeless loop is present and considered, delivering purified air forwards or backwards depending on preference, and not a single moving part is visible, making it safe for children.

Beneath the loop is the familiar cylindrical body, littered with holes that allow the fan to draw in air from the environment. That air goes through a filtration system to be cleaned before being returned to the room, but we’ll talk more about its purifying capabilities later.
The HP09 is compatible with the Dyson app, so it’s not as important as the “dumb” Dyson fan, but it’s fitted with a small circular LCD display on the front that shows purge data and the current status of the fan. Dig deep into your refinement data and control your device via your smartphone.

There’s also a curved remote control with the same bronze finish as the main body that provides access to the fan’s main functions, and built-in magnets allow it to snap onto the bladeless loop when not in use. please. It still gets knocked off pretty easily.
Overall, the Dyson Purifier HP09 Hot+Cool Formaldehyde is an elegantly designed fan, heater and water purifier in a fairly compact form that stands out from the sea of basic white water purifiers, heaters and tower fans.

Function and performance
- Impressive heating and cooling capabilities
- Excellent air purification, including formaldehyde
- Much smarter than the old Dyson water filter
The main function of Dyson Purifier HP09 Hot+Cool Formaldehyde is exactly what the name says. It heats, cools and purifies the air from dust and other particles (including formaldehyde) using a set of built-in sensors and an advanced filtration system.
It’s essentially an all-in-one that’s just as effective in winter as it is in summer, with the added benefits of air purification, so you can ditch another machine for the rest of the year.
That said, it’s one of the most expensive products in Dyson’s purifier collection, and if you’re looking for a Dyson-branded heater, fan, or air purifier, there are slightly less expensive options tailored for each. But for me, the convenience of having all three in one device is worth the extra expense.

Powered by Dyson’s patented Air Multiplier technology. It gathers air in front of the fan to provide consistent airflow, with 10 fan settings to choose from, ranging from a gentle breeze to a powerful airflow, whether you’re heating or cooling your environment. The airflow is also fairly direct. This means you can direct it at yourself without blowing air into an empty space where no one is going to benefit from it.
Heating is rapid, reaching a comfortable temperature of 22 degrees Celsius in your home office within minutes of turning on the fan, and the temperature you need (up to 30 degrees Celsius) to save power. It’s a real boon during the winter months, helping to soothe chilly mornings and evenings.
The cooling function does not actually cool the entire room during the summer months. Because it’s not air conditioned. It relies on evaporative cooling instead. So basically, it does a good job of cooling the people it blows at, but it doesn’t cool the environment itself. I would like to keep it.

Whether heating or cooling a room, the Dyson Purifier HP09 Hot+Cool Formaldehyde provides clean, purified air. Air is drawn from the body of the unit and filtered through a HEPA H13 and activated carbon filter that traps particles as small as 0.1 microns and neutralizes gases including odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). If you’d like to learn more about VOCs and how they are suspended in the air in your home, read our article on indoor air quality.
It also detects and tracks PM2.5, PM10, VOC, NO2 and HCHO levels in real time and shows the current levels on the LCD display. A dedicated automatic fan speed setting increases or decreases depending on levels detected, and a special diffusion mode blows air out the back of the unit to keep the winter chill out.

Dyson is the only manufacturer of air purifiers designed to not only clean the air of common particulates and gases, but also break down and destroy formaldehyde using a dedicated catalytic filter. And unlike HEPA and carbon filters, which need to be replaced after about 4000 hours of use, he does not need to be replaced as it is automatically regenerated during the process.
This is impressive technology considering that formaldehyde gas is 500 times less than the particles captured by the main filter and should be destroyed rather than captured. If you really care about air quality in your home environment, look no further than his HP09 from Dyson for 2023.

There are also smart features delivered by an all-in-one system that boasts compatibility with the MyDyson app for iOS and Android. The app is sleek and easy to use compared to many of its competitors, providing at-a-glance information about the room’s current air quality along with the ability to control the unit itself.
It’s easy to change modes, adjust the speed of the fan, turn it on or off, and fine-grained control over my personal favorite, vibration. so you can direct the airflow at yourself from anywhere in the room without having to move. Yes I am very lazy, I know.
Also delve into the many air quality graphs available in the app, providing an overall breakdown of air quality as well as dedicated graphs to track PM2.5, PM10, VOC, NO2 and HCHO levels in your environment You can also.
It’s also compatible with virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa, so you can set up a routine to warm up your home office 10 minutes before work starts, so you’ll feel comfortable from the start. This is a very useful, but a feature available in many premium alternatives.

price and availability
As suggested throughout this review, the Dyson Purifier HP09 Hot + Cool Formaldehyde is definitely a high-end product with a $769 / £599 price tag.
Although more expensive than most air purifiers, fans and heaters, it is an ‘all-in-one’ device that is used all year round and is one of the most technologically advanced. For some, that’s reason enough.

verdict
The Dyson Purifier HP09 Hot+Cool Formaldehyde is a premium product for the price, but a complete experience that provides heating, cooling and purification in a single product with a dedicated system that breaks down formaldehyde. Many people can do that.
The HP09’s versatile nature means it’s basically a year-round product, providing heating in the winter and cooling in the summer, while also providing purified air. Well-built, smart to operate, and with the compatible My Dyson app you get insightful air quality graphs and a convenient remote control.
The point is that there are practically no weaknesses. It’s just as effective at heating and cooling, and air purification is surprisingly fast in a modestly sized room. Sure, it’s expensive, but worth it if you can afford it.
