Product Review: New Rack-Mountable Eaton UPS Powers Up K–12 Schools

Battery backup systems have come a long way from the cumbersome devices once used to protect individual computers. Now they are network-enabled, rack-mountable, easy to manage, and even capable of converting dirty power into clean sine waves that can extend the life of valuable equipment. Yes, it will provide power even in the event of a power outage.

The Eaton 9PX Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a perfect example of this new generation of battery-backed devices designed for easy integration into almost any network. Also, multiple units can be managed as easily as a single device, making it ideal for locations such as schools with limited IT staff.

Eaton 9PX UPS gives IT teams time to protect their equipment

Designed to be stacked in server racks, each Eaton 9PX UPS occupies 2 units of space. When installing multiple devices, power management software makes it easy to distribute the load across all UPSs to maximize efficiency. The device also has a large LED panel for local status updates and a network card for setting up remote monitoring.

The 1,350 Watt UPS has eight plugs for connecting equipment. The device is rated to deliver power for up to 5 minutes at full load and up to 14 minutes at half load. In my testing, it slightly exceeded that rating, giving administrators plenty of time to safely shut down connected servers and other equipment. You can also configure an automatic shutdown procedure that is triggered whenever mains power is lost.

Eaton Double Conversion Technology Extends Battery Life

It uses double conversion technology to regulate power to ensure only clean power is delivered to connected devices. This not only protects your device from surges, but also extends the life of your device by providing an optimal and stable power supply.

Another Eaton innovation is ABM charging technology designed to extend battery life. Instead of using trickle charging, which actually strains the battery, Eaton UPS units utilize a technology that uses three stages. Eaton says this will extend the life of his UPS by up to 30 months, effectively doubling his normal battery life, so schools can spend less on replacements.

The Eaton 9PX UPS also comes with a network card and management software, allowing IT administrators to monitor the power management of an entire district or school system from a central location.
