This portable charger has saved my iPhone’s butt many times and added hours of battery life. Voltage converters are important because North American small appliances are generally made to handle 120 volt power. Most other areas are powered by much stronger 220V or 240V power outlets. If you plug an American curling iron into a British outlet, it will be fried. The converter regulates that intense voltage to 110-120V. This is a current that is easy to work with in North American appliances. (Some devices, such as phone and laptop chargers, are typically dual-voltage and will soon support both standards.)

This particular model is specifically designed for use in areas with Type G outlets such as the UK. (There is another version for Type C outlets.)

The seven ports and outlets are strategically placed, allowing the adapter to accommodate multiple plugs while remaining relatively compact. The adapter itself isn’t that big, but the prongs stick out and it doesn’t fold up – a minor annoyance while packing.

As someone who habitually misplaces important items, I try to keep an eye on my craft. So when I bought the Tile tracker for testing, I stuck it to the device I lost and shed the most tears: my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro. However, I found myself duplicating an existing Mac feature of his. If I had gone back and redone my first purchase, I would have bought different packs. Tile Slim for your wallet, Sticker for your laptop charger, Mate for your keys. Another option for Apple devices is the Apple AirTag. It’s smaller and more advanced than the Tile lineup, but the Tile lets you track a phone with a tracker or a tracker with a phone, while the AirTag only allows the latter. Doesn’t work on Android. Tile, on the other hand, works on both iOS and Android.

There’s no clear consensus on whether sticking a case on your MacBook is really a good idea. Some speculate that the display hinge will weaken. However, we argued in favor of the casing if you’re using a high-quality case that’s durable without being too bulky.

This hard shell from Incase checks all the boxes. It’s sturdy, lightweight enough to not put pressure on the display, and unlike the cheaper cases I’ve tested, it fits my laptop snugly without any awkward gaps.

It’s nice to know there’s a little extra buffering, even when I’m driving my MacBook to and from the airport or around town. The case provided peace of mind when a thunderstorm thundered us. My backpack got soaked, but the computer itself stayed as dry as possible.

For example, I’m not saying the case protected the laptop if you threw it into the English Channel. But protection from the elements certainly does bring some benefits to your computer.

So far I have been able to recommend each device I purchased for this trip. The same cannot be said for this last one. In fact, I don’t particularly recommend it.

Here is the situation. Despite their technological prowess, many high-end computers these days come with surprisingly low-quality built-in webcams. (Looking at you, MacBook.) An external webcam can polish your on-screen appearance—whether you’re on a lot of Zoom calls while traveling or recording yourself with your laptop. It’s helpful.

However, if you do invest in a webcam, choose a different model than the one I tried. This supposedly 1080p webcam had worse and worse zoom image and audio quality.

The webcam makes the colors look a little better (or perhaps more saturated). Not exactly improved. Despite being the model’s selling point, autofocus was the worst offender here. The mic brought a small, crackly quality to my voice. I’d probably ditch this one – I’d prefer my his Mac’s built-in hardware, substandard camera, and all anytime.
