The Stadia controller will soon be usable with Bluetooth

Last year, Google announced that it would be discontinuing its Stadia service on January 18, 2023. This left many questions, including what happened to the Stadia controllers that were tied to the service.

Google has announced the release of a self-service tool that allows customers to enable Bluetooth on Stadia controllers. This was a dormant feature of the controller that was disabled in the firmware.

Once enabled, your Stadia Controller can be used as a standard Bluetooth controller on other devices. This is currently not possible as the Stadia Controller was intended to work directly connected to the Stadia cloud service. This update should allow Stadia customers to continue using their controllers on other devices instead of rendering them useless after January 18th.

Google also released one final game to Stadia players, Worm Game, before the service shuts down next Wednesday. This is a game that has been in use internally for years and was used by the team to test Stadia functionality. It’s a deliberately no-frills, minimal title that would never have seen the light of day if the service hadn’t been shut down, but it’s cool in that you get to experience the games that were used to test and build the service. It’s an Easter egg.
