Apple taps new suppliers for iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope camera

For several months, there have been reports that Apple is working on equipping the iPhone 15 Pro Max (Pro Max only) with a periscope lens. However, the current supplier seemed unable to handle the job, and Cupertino had to find a new partner.

according to ElekApple sources OIS actuators for the periscope module from LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics, with both companies supplying 70% and 30% of the components respectively.

Jahwa is working with Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics to develop actuators based on ball guides. The company will reportedly supply Samsung with components for the upcoming Galaxy S23 series, similar to the Galaxy A54 that was leaked last week.

Apple’s current suppliers Alps Alpine and Mizumi offer spring-loaded actuators for iPhone cameras. But ball guide actuators are faster, more accurate, and consume less power, so Apple is making the switch.

Both LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics have invested heavily in their camera component facilities. These actuators will reportedly prove highly beneficial to both companies.

Apple’s first periscope lens is expected to arrive with the iPhone 15 Pro Max later this year. Fans of the smaller Pro will have to wait until next year’s iPhone 16 series. The new vanilla iPhone model is looking at digital zoom by switching to a 48MP main camera, finally leaving behind the 12MP sensor of the past.
