Samsung improves the 200-MP formula for Isocell HP2 smartphone camera sensor

Last year, Samsung demonstrated the power of its gigantic 200 million-pixel camera sensor by printing a billboard-sized photo of a cat taken with a mobile phone. Now the company is starting mass production of its successor, his Isocell HP2.

Interestingly, Samsung has chosen not to include the final 200 MP camera sensor module in any of its smartphones launched since the announcement of the Isocell HP1 in 2021.

But that seems to be changing as the upcoming Galaxy S23 Ultra is widely believed to include a 200MP main camera built around the new Isocell HP2 sensor. We won’t have to wait too long for confirmation as it’s expected to be announced at the beginning of the month.

Back to what we know. The HP2 packs 200 million 0.6 micrometer (µm) pixels into a 1/1.3 inch type format. But the Tetra pixel binning technology here is arguably even more impressive than the headline-grabbing raw megapixel counts.

By combining smaller pixels into larger pixels, you can capture more light and detail. This is especially useful for low-light photography.
