Samsung and iFixit launched their official repair program last August and now have support for a few more devices. According to Samsung, the company’s self-repair program currently includes the Galaxy S22 family and some laptops (Galaxy Book Pro 15 and Galaxy Book Pro 360 15).

As we said at launch, this repair program doesn’t really wow us. The Galaxy S22 is the first time the program has featured a current Samsung phone, but it’s only been up to date for a couple of weeks. No. People drop new phones just as often as old ones, so it’s nice to see the latest parts hitting stores sooner. It’s incomplete and only supports the last three years of Samsung’s flagship when Samsung releases about 40 phone models per year. None of Samsung’s foldable product line (which still breaks all the time!).

The parts selection is very imperfect, with each member of the Galaxy S22 family only featuring a charging port, rear glass, screen battery and frame bundle. togetherWho wants to buy a screen and a battery at the same time? How can you destroy both of these components at once? And tons of stuff like cameras, speakers, buttons, millions of delicate ribbon cables that can easily snap if you try to fix them, antennas, charging coils, rumble motors, fingerprint sensors, cooling pads, SIM trays, screws, and more. Parts are missing. and the motherboard.

The guides are great, but iFixit offers professionally shot walkthroughs with the usual meticulous detail. There are only three of them, but you can get past all the hard parts and easily remove the phone while following them.

You can't buy this whole assembly even if you just want the keyboard.

The laptop is brand new and the program really only offers battery and exterior parts replacement. You can buy the entire top half of the laptop as a screen replacement. This includes the outer shell, display, webcam, microphone, hinges, display cable and Wi-Fi antenna. There is an “upper case” which is the entire keyboard deck of the laptop, with the keyboard, the top case surrounding the keyboard, the touchpad, and all the associated wiring. It’s common to spill a drink on your keyboard and need a new keyboard, but iFixit and Samsung aren’t going to sell just that part. The company also sells replacement batteries, touchpads, fingerprint sensors, bottom cases and small rubber feet. What’s missing are fans, heatsinks, motherboards, Wi-Fi cards, a million ribbon cables, speakers, ports of all kinds, and just about every internal component.

Even if the program seems strangely unappealingly designed, it’s a start and better than nothing. However, anyone serious about the repair should probably look elsewhere for parts.
