Two years after being discontinued, the original HomePod is back with a second generation avatar. Newer models have a modified speaker array and incorporate temperature and humidity sensors.
The second-generation HomePod is equipped with the same 4-inch high-excursion woofer as before. New five horn-loaded tweeters replace the seven on the original model. The original model’s 6 mics have been replaced with 4 new far-field mics. There is also an internal low frequency calibration microphone for automatic bass correction.
Like the original model, the new HomePod can auto-compensate for the room by listening to feedback from the microphone and adjusting itself. Apple S7 SoC powers computational audio and real-time tuning.
The new HomePod also supports stereo pairing like other HomePod models. Just put 2 of these in the room and it will ask you if you want to pair. In addition to serving as stereo speakers, HomePod can also play Dolby Atmos audio from Apple TV 4K. As before, the 1st and 2nd generation cannot pair, so you need the same his HomePod model to create a stereo pair.
The new HomePod also includes temperature and humidity sensors. They can report real-time information about their surroundings and also automatically trigger certain functions, such as turning on the air conditioner or closing the blinds when preset temperature targets are achieved. Voice Recognition can also listen carefully for smoke and beeps from carbon monoxide detectors and send alerts to your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. This feature will also be enabled on his HomePod mini.
The design has remained largely unchanged, but the new model is slightly shorter and lighter than its predecessor. Available in his two colors, white and the new bright gray Midnight, both come with matching power cables that are detachable.
