New York City plans to offer free abortion pills at four sexual health clinics through a city-funded initiative announced earlier this week by Mayor Eric Adams.
“New York City has always been a beacon of leadership in this country, and we will continue to lead,” Adams said. Speech about women’s health at City Hall on Tuesday.
According to Gothamist, city health officials say these four clinics could potentially provide up to 10,000 abortion pills (mifepristone and misoprostol) a year. The first rollout will take place on Wednesday at a sexual health clinic in the Bronx. Patients who wish to have a medical abortion can start with an evaluation by a doctor and then make an appointment or visit an unscheduled clinic.
Three other clinics in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens aim to have the drug available by the end of the year. The timeline could take up to a year, he said, as workers first undergo federally mandated training.
The initiative aims to break down barriers and limit disparities across health care, especially for low-income communities.
“The rivers of racism, social and economic inequality, and lack of research on innovation are all flowing into a sea of gender health disparities,” Adams said. We have to do better and we will do better. Women’s health needs intensive care.”
