Nikon Z9 review: everything and more

At around 3 pounds (1,340g), the Nikon Z9 is a mirrorless camera brick with more buttons and features than we tested in about two months. Thanks to the new Expeed 7 image processor, it has a new full-frame 45.7MP stacked CMOS sensor that can shoot RAW photos with over 1,000 frames at 20fps (if you have a fast enough card). And the video specs don’t compare to the flagship specs of Sony’s A1 and Canon’s R5. These include 12-bit 8K 60fps or 4K 120fps in N-RAW, his RAW video format from Nikon. You can also shoot in ProRes RAW up to 5K 30fps.

All of these specs are housed in a large, heavy, and very sturdy camera body. The Z9’s physical design is unlike anything you’ll find in other flagship mirrorless cameras. This is a welcome change for professional photographers who use large telephoto lenses for wildlife and sports photography. The hardware of this system is not compact.

But the Nikon Z9 is more than just specs and hardware. Previous cameras in Nikon’s Z lineup of mirrorless cameras didn’t impress when compared to the competition. I had pretty much given up on the brand when the Z9 came out.
