Dutch architectural firm Zecc Architecten recently renovated 19 abandoned buildings.th A century-old water tower turned into a collection of bright modern apartments with an industrial flair and 360-degree views. The once dilapidated Amsterdam Route, a national monument in the Dutch city of Utrecht, comes to life in this stunning transformation.
The revived water tower contains three identical luxury apartments stacked on top of each other, with a six-story penthouse and a cafe and retail space on the ground floor.
Each apartment occupies an entire level on its own and is cleverly set within the circular frame of the structure. The architects were conscious of integrating many of the original industrial features of the water tower into the interior design of the residence. This includes original brickwork, wood and steel beams, metal interior panels and concrete floors.

Each apartment has its own private elevator entrance. Open shared living and dining space with integrated kitchen. toilets; 360-degree windows overlooking the Dom; Outdoor terrace with corten steel frame. The cathedral’s high ceilings allowed the company to raise the mezzanine bedrooms overlooking the rest of the house.
“The design challenge was to create a sunny opening, a beautiful outdoor area with a view of the Dom, and an accessible location with an elevator and a safe atrium,” explains Zecc Architecten. “You walk directly into the apartment from the elevator. It’s a space-saving solution that gives a sense of luxury.”

At the top of the tower, architects have created a stunning six-story 400-square-meter (4,306-square-foot) penthouse. This home consists of a windowless cinema/concert room. 3 guest bedrooms with private bathrooms. Master bedroom with private bathroom. a relaxation zone; a storage room; and a large modern kitchen on the 8th floor with a large void overlooking the stunning roof structure. Outstanding living quarters on the 9th floor with triple height ceilings and impressive 360 degree views.
“The space becomes more and more open towards the top, creating a spectacular succession of floors, voids and views,” the company said. “The space on the ninth floor is spectacular. Under the high roof made of iron and wood, there are many panoramic windows with 360-degree views.”

In the future, the rear part of the remaining Amsterdam Sestratweg facility will be converted into a series of compact apartments. The plan aims to further highlight urban development and maintain the iconic presence of this stand-alone historic building.
