Oscar nominations 2023: First-time acting nominees dominate

A staggering majority of the 2023 Oscar acting nominees were nominated for an Oscar for the first time today.

There are 20 spots in four categories – Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress – and 16 of them have been nominated for the first time this year.

The large number of nominees being nominated for the first time is a breath of fresh air. They give us the opportunity to celebrate not only industry veterans such as Yeoh, Quan and Fraser, but also young actors with fewer feature films like Mescal, Hsu and Butler.

Of the four nominees already nominated for an Academy Award, Cate Blanchett (library), Judd Hirsch (favermans), Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and Michelle Williams (favermans) — Only Blanchett has ever won.
