Undoubtedly, Karin’s characters share a variety of salient traits, but they are never far from being self-confident and unsure of themselves. They try to balance the point of view, the need for validation. Karin’s comedy is unique in this respect. Throughout, Indian culture and traditions are interspersed with these works as punch lines and obstacles. It’s not hard to see why such stories are so frustrating for South Asian viewers.
Still, the backlash seems to be targeting a single South Asian writer who has risen to prominence in the wider field of television production and has achieved visible success with her work.

This deep-rooted problem, perhaps this pressure, has led to increased scrutiny.
The conversation also falls short of giving a holistic view of some of the larger stories within Kaling’s work. for example, Never Have I Ever Characters such as Devi’s mother Nalini and cousin Kamala appear, each with a different take on what it’s like to be a brown woman. One, a single mother, deals with her teenage daughter, her dermatology practice, and her personal life after her husband’s death. Another left her family to pursue her dreams in America and try to find success in a male-dominated world, while rejecting her arranged marriage and staying with the man she truly loves. These characters have strength and conviction embedded in their bones, and neither shy away from being themselves.

In contrast, Devi, who is clearly unsure of herself and her culture, is not entirely representative of the modern Indian girl growing up in America today. Consideration of people from new york Mo Amer praised Mo on the eponymous Netflix show. Reflecting the representation of immigrants and Palestinian identities on American television, the piece credits Amer for creating a truly flawed and often “irrational” character. It exists in a world vastly different from the world of , but happens to share such traits and tropes of immigration. However, their mistakes are not currently celebrated. Their anger is not seen as a sign of a bigger problem.
The character critiques at hand are valid, but many can also be complex, funny, and candid. This is probably due to age-old comedic tropes and instances where viewers perceive young, prominent characters to be making fun of themselves and their culture. Discrimination and internalized racism are frequent realities, but viewers of South Asian women and Karin are now wanting better.
This request is not unreasonable.
Yet the sharp, visceral hatred of Karin online hasn’t always worked, nor has it been remorseful. The girl in brown may need to evolve on screen beyond what has been offered so far. South Asian women need variety and depth, but Karin’s characters can stand as they are and constitute an important piece of the big picture.
